Starting therapy can be an intimidating process, and many people may delay it until they're really struggling. But know that you don't have to be in crisis to be in therapy, and that it's okay if you are.
Here are some things it can be helpful to know as a new client:
*Even if you are nervous about starting therapy, know that it is very okay to make sure you find someone you truly feel comfortable with. And it's okay (encouraged, even) to be direct if something your therapist is doing makes you uncomfortable.
*You are here to explore your psyche, not entertain your therapist. It is okay if you don't know what to say or struggle with how to say it. In fact, sometimes that means you're really exploring new or difficult subjects, which can be an important part of therapy.
*Your therapist is a trained professional, and is comfortable with a lot of things that other people might not be. You can reveal your darker emotions and the less you censor yourself, the more your therapist may be able to help you. It's normal to be embarrassed about certain topics, but know that those are still okay to discuss in therapy.
*Therapy can be really hard work, and it is very normal for there to be times when you don't feel like going, or don't feel like talking about the most pressing issues. It can really help the process if you can talk about these feelings, and know that they are valid.
